Inauguration of the controversial monument to "Freedom and Democracy" marks January 13th commemorative program
The monument to "Democracy and Freedom", which cost more than 150,000 escudos and generated a lot of controversy in Cape Verde, will be inaugurated on January 13, at the access traffic circle to Nelson Mandela International Airport, in Achada Grande. The event will be presided over by Ulisses Correia e Silva, after the singing of the national anthem. The Prime Minister will then make his speech after a brief technical presentation of the work by the head of Estradas de Cabo Verde. The program will close with the "Freedom and Democracy" festival in the FIC space at the old airport.
To mark the 35th anniversary of the first multi-party elections, the government has planned a week of political, cultural, recreational and awareness-raising activities in the city of Praia, starting with the inauguration of the monument. The aim, as a statement from the Executive emphasizes, is to enhance democratic memory and strengthen the culture of freedom and citizen participation.
The capital will host various academic events in this context, such as lectures at the University of Cape Verde, ISCEE, UniPiaget and the University of Santiago. The program includes the international conference "The book in a democratic society", to be held at the Pedro Cardoso bookshop, as well as an exhibition commemorating the 35th anniversary of the event.
There will also be a special panel dedicated to January 13, on the theme "The construction of Cape Verdean democracy: current challenges and the role of youth", which aims to promote critical reflection, intergenerational debate and strengthening the involvement of young people in the consolidation of democracy.
The celebrations extend to the Cape Verdean diaspora, with a series of commemorative activities in Senegal, Portugal and the United States, where emigrants will be involved in cultural events, civic awareness actions and moments of sharing. The note stresses that the acts aim to strengthen ties between Cape Verde and its diaspora and to value the historical contribution of emigrants to the affirmation of freedom, democracy and citizenship.
